Promote or train? The SvS Day 4 maths

Which troops score the most SvS points per minute of training.

Short answer: promote. T9 → T10 scores 42.9 SvS points per minute of training time, while training a fresh T10 scores 23.7. Promoting T9 to T10 is 1.8× as efficient as training new T10s.

Day 4 of State vs State prep scores troops, and most players simply train their best tier and burn speedups. That leaves a lot of points on the table. A promotion costs only the difference between two tiers — in time, resources and points — and because those differences are uneven, some promotions are far cheaper in time than the points they give. Here's the maths, so you can spend your training speedups where they score the most.

Points per minute of training time at 0% training speed. Your real speed multiplies every row by the same amount, so the order never changes — the top of this list is the top for everyone.

Notice how training gets more efficient at higher tiers, but never catches up with the best promotions. A T9 → T10 promotion takes 21 seconds per troop for 15 points; a new T10 takes 152 seconds for 60.

What promoting costs

Promoting a T9 Infantry to T10 costs 1,394 Meat, 1,045 Wood, 244 Coal and 51 Iron per troop — the gap between the two tiers' training costs. It's not free, but per point it's usually cheaper than training. The real limit is how many lower-tier troops you own: you can only promote what you already have.

How to time it for Day 4

Troops score when training finishes, not when it starts. A big batch started late on day 3 can land on day 4 and score in full.
Stack your speed. The state's Mobilize skill (+30%), Minister of Education (+50% speed and +200 capacity) and Vice President (+10%) all add to your camp's training speed while they're active.
Promote in full batches. Your camp capacity limits each batch, so check how many troops fit before you start.
T11 promotions (T10 → T11) score 32.1 points per minute: worse than T9 → T10, better than training T11 fresh (25.0).
